Keepin’ it Real – Core Values

Posted by:

I have written about transparency here a good deal. Open honesty about feelings, beliefs and just the way things seem to be. All the things I used to bury. It seemed simpler that way. Other people’s opinions about me are none of my business…as they say. By living that way I get a certain weightlessness of spirit and things that could have collected up on me and become a “problem” rather just flutter away in the breeze, the flow of ...

Is Freedom a Choice?

Posted by:

I attended the Integral Twelve Step Meeting at Alaska Wisdom Recovery this week and the topic was freedom. The thoughts went down so many great branches! So many that today, while those branches spread, I am going back to the roots.

This Summer Solstice weekend also marks Fathers Day and my three-year anniversary of sobriety. I have talked about transparency here quite a bit and am going to offer up some more. It is what keeps me sober and with ...

Who Is This “We” in “Me”? Question Everything.

Posted by:

It seems that growth happens faster and faster as the attention leans more and more on easing up and is loosened from the grip of old ways of thinking. This easing up keeps coming as long as I follow some of the best advice I ever got from a bumper sticker. I love that advice…Question Everything. Especially what I might believe is already “figured out”.

I’m sure some of the people that have that bumper sticker are coming from a place ...

Bringing It To Life

Posted by:

The discussion here this month of a higher power and finding that connection within ourselves has led me to another thought. I’m thinking about how finding that for ourselves is absolutely essential to our own establishment and growth of self and Self. Growth of our self in our day to day lives of “being better people” and behaving in interactive constructive ways. Not the destructive methods of addictive, unhealthy behaviors. This being fostered by the growth of Self. The capital ...

Getting Specific About Meditation

Posted by:

So in this second month and looking at what we’ve covered thus far in second step thinking, I’d like to get more specific about what it means to have a “daily practice that develops my body, mind, heart, and soul”. This consists not only of new ways of conducting our outer lives but also, as we have begun to examine in Time for a Higher Power  and then Continue Reading →

Going a Little Deeper

Posted by:

I think it is important to say again that what I put forward here is what makes sense to me and I am in no way saying this is the way it is or being ‘preachy’ in any way. I offer my view point in the hope it resonates with someone and they develop their own “way” because that’s all we have that’s real and lasting.

I’m ready to go a little deeper into this topic of Higher Power that was ...

Moving Toward Clarity

Posted by:

Our Starting Line is all about clarity. The clarity gained in recovery and all the new meanings that word has for us. The new meanings it has for us now and will have as we gain more of it.

There is clarity of thought of course. Not being dope sick, hung over or in full on regret and guilt mode over an unhealthy behavior is an obvious leap forward in clarity. Removing this weight frees the mind to use its energy ...

Individuality is the Key

Posted by:

Individuality is the key AND the lock it seems.

Be Yourself! That sounds like a cat poster but it gets overused for a reason. It is the major key to understanding and gaining ground in personal growth.

There are so many general guidelines to finding the best path. The teachings of a religious belief, The Twelve Steps, in both the original form and newer Integral Twelve Steps, and the bulging “Self Help” section of the bookstore (aka Amazon). All of these resources ...

Caring for Your Self

Posted by:

Thinking about our own self care and Self care is essential to our recovery.

I went looking at images and searched by “attention to self”. Interestingly this brought up almost all negative imagery of self hurt and psychological disorders. So apparently Google follows a rather popular social construct that attention to self is self-ish.

We were taught, “it is better to give than to receive” and self sacrifice is a virtue. While these are both true, it is also true that you ...

A Time for Change

Posted by:

If everything in your life is perfect and as you want it, you can skip this post entirely…
Change is a topic that a lot of people touch on about now in the form of the New Year’s Resolution. A vow to stop smoking, lose weight, get fit, or somehow make some kind of a dent in their “should” list. It’s indeed interesting to look at how change really happens for people.

Everyone in recovery has a point when there came ...
