Keepin’ it Real – Core Values

Posted by:

I have written about transparency here a good deal. Open honesty about feelings, beliefs and just the way things seem to be. All the things I used to bury. It seemed simpler that way. Other people’s opinions about me are none of my business…as they say. By living that way I get a certain weightlessness of spirit and things that could have collected up on me and become a “problem” rather just flutter away in the breeze, the flow of ...

The Source of Pain, Fear and Suffering

Posted by:

In this process of facing our problems or “walking through our fire” as I have discussed here it becomes necessary to start to break down the language and ask ourselves what we mean when we say certain things that we assume are true. What is the source of my pain, fear and suffering?

First of all, what is pain? In order to answer that for myself, I had to ask, what is the opposite of pain? What is it for you? ...

Let’s Get Real – A Personal Inventory

Posted by:

Hooray! Fourth month, fourth step talk. As always my approach is a Personal Recovery Plan that includes counseling, group meetings/support and 12 step involvement. That mix is as individual as each person’s recovery and I always like to offer a balanced look at personally interpreting the 12 Steps for one’s own growth. Millions of years of ancestry that learned how to survive and passed this knowledge along through our very DNA and thereby the structure that ...

Moving Toward Clarity

Posted by:

Our Starting Line is all about clarity. The clarity gained in recovery and all the new meanings that word has for us. The new meanings it has for us now and will have as we gain more of it.

There is clarity of thought of course. Not being dope sick, hung over or in full on regret and guilt mode over an unhealthy behavior is an obvious leap forward in clarity. Removing this weight frees the mind to use its energy ...

Working Together With Ourselves

Posted by:

When someone crosses the threshold of change, or even contemplates it, there is a sense of conflict. A battle between the two parts that seem to make up “us”. One part wants to be sober and one part keeps driving to drink. One part wants to stay out of the casino and another craves it. One part that wants healthy behavior and another that is caught in a behavior pattern that is unhealthy.

These two parts seem to be in in ...
